How to find and verify submitted custom field values on an order

What you will achieve in this guide

Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.

EXPECTED SETUP TIME Varies by feature
COMPATIBILITY See requirements in this guide
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY Zero Code Required

Follow an order-level custom field from customer submission to its saved order information.

When to use this guide

Use this when fulfilment or support staff need information collected for a particular purchase.

Before you begin

Use a test customer and order that you can identify. Confirm the feature is active, placed on a supported page, and included in your Rivio plan.

Worked example

Use a Custom field labelled Gift message with a recognisable answer such as Happy birthday, Maya! on a supported order page.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Open the field configuration and record its label and internal key if shown. Confirm you are using an order-level field, not a Profile field.
  2. Save and place the configuration on the supported order page.
  3. Open the actual customer page for a test order, enter Happy birthday, Maya!, and use its submit or save action.
  4. Open that same order in Shopify admin using its order number.
  5. Inspect the order’s additional details or custom attributes for the configured key and value. Keep the order number in your test notes.
  6. Revisit the customer page and test an update if the field allows it. Check the same order again rather than a different test order.

Verify the result

Test Expected result or check
Submitted answer The configured order attribute contains the test answer.
Preview only No saved order answer is established.
Profile field Look in customer-level storage instead.

Limitations

  • The field’s target page determines available storage and submission behaviour.
  • Collecting a tax identifier does not verify it or change tax treatment.
  • Do not assume a fulfilment integration imports custom attributes.

Troubleshooting

Problem What to check
The expected result does not appear Check the saved state, exact feature configuration, supported page, and matching test inputs.
The preview and actual page differ Use a real test checkout, completed order, or signed-in account; editor data is simulated.
A change has an unexpected effect Repeat the same test with one relevant setting changed. Review other active rules before adding another copy.
