How to Create an Automatic Product Discount in Shopify
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Automatic discount rules reduce eligible product, order, or shipping charges when their configured conditions match.
How this feature works
Choose the discount class according to the charge you want to reduce: selected products, the eligible order amount, or an eligible shipping rate. Eligibility conditions are separate from the benefit. Existing Shopify discount-combination rules still apply when another offer or code is present.
Before you begin
Open Apps > Rivio Checkout Customizer in the intended store. Prepare the cart, customer, products, address, or order needed by the example, and check the feature’s supported inputs before activating it.
Worked example: Give eligible B2B buyers 10% off a selected product
Example setup: Demo T-shirt $20; a valid business-customer session and a retail control session.
Step-by-step instructions
Open Product/order discounts and create a product-class discount.
Select Demo T-shirt or its supported product scope, then choose percentage and enter 10.
Add the B2B/customer-type condition supported by this editor. Use a wholesale tag only if that is your intended supported eligibility model.
Review combination and schedule controls, then save and activate.
Open checkout as the qualifying business customer with one Demo T-shirt.
Repeat as a retail customer and with an untargeted product.
Verify the result
| Test case | Expected result or verification |
|---|---|
| Eligible $20 Demo T-shirt | The rule’s 10% reduction is $2 before other adjustments. |
| Retail control | This B2B-only rule does not apply. |
| Unselected product | It does not receive this selected-product discount. |
Important: A customer tag called wholesale is not automatically the same as Shopify B2B company/customer context.
If the result is different
| Check | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Benefit missing | Confirm the saved Active discount, eligible product/order/rate, schedule, and amount basis. |
| Works alone but not with another offer | Check Shopify’s combination eligibility and the discount’s settings. |
| Threshold seems wrong | Compare below, exactly at, and above the configured operator using the stated currency and total basis. |
