How to configure and test discounts on upsell offers
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Configure the supported offer incentive and verify its actual price when a customer accepts the recommendation.
When to use this guide
Use this when an upsell is shown with a discount or savings message.
Before you begin
Open Apps → Rivio Checkout Customizer in the intended store. Use supported conditions from the current editor and record the exact amount, product, customer, or address basis before testing. Checkout upsells require Shopify Plus; use the supported Thank you or Order status setup for those surfaces.
Worked example
Recommend a $20 Demo Bottle with a 10% incentive. A single unit has an illustrative $2 reduction before other applicable calculations.
Step-by-step instructions
- Open the intended upsell campaign and select the trigger products separately from the recommended products.
- Set the supported Offer incentive to 10% and review Apply discount on each item where provided.
- Record the page, offered quantity, and any other active discount relevant to the test.
- Save the active campaign and its matching page placement.
- Accept one bottle through the actual customer flow and inspect the resulting item price and discount allocation.
- Repeat with multiple units and with another valid discount only when the intended combination allows it.

Verify the result
| Test | Expected result or check |
|---|---|
| One $20 bottle | Check the configured 10% offer reduction. |
| Multiple units | Verify per-item or other configured allocation behaviour. |
| Displayed savings | It agrees with the actual resulting purchase. |
Screenshot to add: The accepted offer’s resulting item price and discount allocation.
Limitations
- A displayed offer is not proof that a purchase was completed.
- Combination permissions and actual purchase flow must be tested separately.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The expected result does not appear | Check the saved state, exact feature configuration, supported page, and matching test inputs. |
| The preview and actual page differ | Use a real test checkout, completed order, or signed-in account; editor data is simulated. |
| A change has an unexpected effect | Repeat the same test with one relevant setting changed. Review other active rules before adding another copy. |
