How to test discounts, gifts, and validations after customers edit checkout items
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Verify rules that depend on cart contents after customers change quantities or remove items during checkout.
When to use this guide
Use this when Edit line items operates alongside discounts, free gifts, bundles, or order validations.
Before you begin
Use Shopify Plus and the current Rivio feature entitlement. Save the active configuration and its matching supported checkout placement before testing.
Worked example
Use an editable $25 item, a gift eligible above $100, and a validation requiring a $30 minimum. Test each dependency separately before combining them.
Step-by-step instructions
- Record each rule’s exact amount or product basis and create a cart that qualifies.
- Enable and place Edit line items with the supported editing actions.
- Reduce quantity or remove a qualifying product, then wait for checkout totals to update.
- Inspect the applicable discount, gift eligibility, and any validation message after the change.
- Restore the item or quantity and repeat the check. For a bundle, inspect the resulting component quantities separately.
- Complete valid test orders and inspect charged prices, gift quantity, and final items. Retest each feature alone if the combined outcome is unclear.

Verify the result
| Test | Expected result or check |
|---|---|
| Qualifying product removed | Dependent rules are checked against the resulting cart. |
| Cart below minimum | The active minimum validation enforces at its selected run location. |
| Valid cart restored | Confirm stale errors or benefits do not remain. |

Limitations
- This changes a current cart, not a completed order.
- Do not assume all rules share the same subtotal basis.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The expected result does not appear | Check the saved state, exact feature configuration, supported page, and matching test inputs. |
| The preview and actual page differ | Use a real test checkout, completed order, or signed-in account; editor data is simulated. |
| A change has an unexpected effect | Repeat the same test with one relevant setting changed. Review other active rules before adding another copy. |
