How to Block PO Box Addresses on Shopify Checkout
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Order validation rules prevent checkout when a cart or buyer matches a disallowed condition, and show a message explaining how to continue.
How this feature works
A validation describes an invalid checkout state and shows an actionable error when that state matches. Checkout completion evaluates at Pay now; Checkout interaction can provide earlier evaluation when selected. Active status, schedule, and run location all matter. A rule with no conditions can affect every checkout.
Before you begin
Open Apps > Rivio Checkout Customizer in the intended store. Prepare the cart, customer, products, address, or order needed by the example, and check the feature’s supported inputs before activating it.
Worked example: Reject a PO Box while accepting a street address
Example setup: A store that cannot fulfill to PO Boxes and a shippable test product.
Step-by-step instructions
Create an Order validation named No PO Boxes.
Select the supported shipping-address condition/operator that identifies your disallowed PO Box text.
Write Please enter a street address; we cannot deliver to PO Boxes.
Choose the supported address error location, review the schedule, and enable Checkout completion.
Save and activate, then test PO Box 123 and common variants such as P.O. Box 123 using the actual supported matching behavior.
Replace the address with an ordinary street address and retry; verify this rule no longer blocks.
Verify the result
| Test case | Expected result or verification |
|---|---|
| Matched PO Box address | The actionable error appears and completion is blocked. |
| Ordinary street address | This PO Box rule does not block. |
| Alternate spelling | Verify it is covered by your actual matching operator; do not assume a simple string match recognizes every format. |
Important: An address rule is separate from carrier eligibility. Document the spellings your own configuration has successfully tested.
If the result is different
| Check | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Never fires | Check Active status, included dates/days, matching invalid inputs, and Run location. |
| Blocks everyone | Inspect empty conditions or an overly broad any/OR branch. |
| Still blocks after correction | Retest the same amount/product/address basis and review other active validations. |
