How to Create Customer-Based Shopify Checkout Validation Rules
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Order validation rules prevent checkout when a cart or buyer matches a disallowed condition, and show a message explaining how to continue.
How this feature works
A validation describes an invalid checkout state and shows an actionable error when that state matches. Checkout completion evaluates at Pay now; Checkout interaction can provide earlier evaluation when selected. Active status, schedule, and run location all matter. A rule with no conditions can affect every checkout.
Before you begin
Open Apps > Rivio Checkout Customizer in the intended store. Prepare the cart, customer, products, address, or order needed by the example, and check the feature’s supported inputs before activating it.
Worked example: Require a larger order for logged-in wholesale buyers
Example setup: A wholesale-tagged test customer and an untagged control customer.
Step-by-step instructions
Create an Order validation named Wholesale minimum 100.
Add the supported customer-tag condition wholesale and the amount condition less than 100.
Use all/AND where the form offers it so only tagged buyers below the amount are invalid.
Write Wholesale orders must reach $100 to continue; check the editor’s currency and total basis.
Review schedule and message location, select Checkout completion, save, and activate.
Test the tagged buyer below and at $100, then repeat as an untagged and anonymous buyer.
Verify the result
| Test case | Expected result or verification |
|---|---|
| Logged-in wholesale buyer at $99 | Blocked when both invalid-case conditions match. |
| Logged-in wholesale buyer at $100 | Not blocked by this minimum rule. |
| Untagged buyer at $99 | Not blocked by this wholesale-specific rule. |
Important: Use the editor’s supported B2B context instead if your policy concerns Shopify business customers rather than a tag. Tags require customer context.
If the result is different
| Check | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Never fires | Check Active status, included dates/days, matching invalid inputs, and Run location. |
| Blocks everyone | Inspect empty conditions or an overly broad any/OR branch. |
| Still blocks after correction | Retest the same amount/product/address basis and review other active validations. |
