How to Show or Hide Shopify Payment Methods Based on Conditions
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Payment rules hide, rename, or reorder payment methods that Shopify makes available for a checkout.
How this feature works
Payment customizations act on methods Shopify makes available in the checkout. Hide controls visibility, Rename changes the selection label, and Reorder changes supported list positions. These rules do not enable a payment provider or rewrite its payment-processing behavior.
Before you begin
Open Apps > Rivio Checkout Customizer in the intended store. Prepare the cart, customer, products, address, or order needed by the example, and check the feature’s supported inputs before activating it.
Worked example: Hide PayPal only for tagged wholesale customers
Example setup: Two test customers: one tagged wholesale and one without that tag; PayPal normally offered.
Step-by-step instructions
Open Payment customizations and create a Hide rule targeting the actual PayPal method.
Add the supported customer-tag condition and enter wholesale exactly.
Use the matching mode that limits the rule to that condition; avoid an unrelated OR branch that broadens eligibility.
Save and activate.
Sign in as the wholesale customer, start an eligible checkout, and inspect the payment methods.
Repeat as the untagged customer and as an anonymous buyer to distinguish known customer context.
Verify the result
| Test case | Expected result or verification |
|---|---|
| Logged-in wholesale customer | PayPal is hidden when the tag condition matches. |
| Logged-in untagged customer | PayPal remains normally available. |
| Anonymous checkout | Do not assume Shopify provides the stored customer’s tags. |
If the result is different
| Check | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Method never appears in the control checkout | Check Shopify payment eligibility/settings first; the customization cannot create an unavailable method. |
| Rule matches the wrong label or customer | Use the actual method name and a matching logged-in customer for tag tests. |
| Issue affects express buttons or credit cards | Check Shopify’s surface/plan/country restrictions. Normal method reordering does not guarantee accelerated-button ordering. |
Shopify payment restrictions
On non-Plus stores in the United States and Canada, payment customization is limited to non-credit-card methods. Shopify Plus is required for credit-card field customizations there. Verify accelerated payment surfaces separately.
