Shopify Payment Method Customization Not Working? How to Fix It
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
If a payment customization is not working, first confirm the target method normally exists for the test checkout. Then check the exact name, activation, matching conditions, and Shopify’s restrictions for the payment surface.
How this feature works
Payment customizations act on methods Shopify makes available in the checkout. Hide controls visibility, Rename changes the selection label, and Reorder changes supported list positions. These rules do not enable a payment provider or rewrite its payment-processing behavior.
Before you begin
Open Apps > Rivio Checkout Customizer in the intended store. Prepare the cart, customer, products, address, or order needed by the example, and check the feature’s supported inputs before activating it.
Worked example: Diagnose a payment rule that appears ineffective
Example setup: An active hide rule and a repeatable cart, customer, and address.
Troubleshooting steps
Open a control checkout where the condition does not match and confirm the target payment method normally appears.
Compare that actual method name with the rule’s match value, including spaces and wording.
Check saved Active status and the corresponding Shopify payment customization activation.
Reproduce with the exact condition: amount/currency, customer login/tag, or other supported input.
Review other rules targeting the same method and test in isolation in your demo store.
If the problem affects credit cards or express buttons, check Shopify’s restrictions for the plan, country, and payment surface before changing the rule.
Verify the result
| Test case | Expected result or verification |
|---|---|
| Wrong method label | Correct the match to the actual method and retest. |
| Tag rule tested anonymously | Sign in as the intended tagged customer. |
| Method absent in the control checkout | Investigate normal payment eligibility first. |
If the result is different
| Check | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Method never appears in the control checkout | Check Shopify payment eligibility/settings first; the customization cannot create an unavailable method. |
| Rule matches the wrong label or customer | Use the actual method name and a matching logged-in customer for tag tests. |
| Issue affects express buttons or credit cards | Check Shopify’s surface/plan/country restrictions. Normal method reordering does not guarantee accelerated-button ordering. |
Shopify payment restrictions
On non-Plus stores in the United States and Canada, payment customization is limited to non-credit-card methods. Shopify Plus is required for credit-card field customizations there. Verify accelerated payment surfaces separately.
