How to Add an Upsell to Shopify Checkout
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Upsell campaigns recommend products during checkout or on the Thank you and Order status pages.
How this feature works
A trigger product determines who qualifies for an offer; the offer product is the recommendation the buyer can purchase. Configure the campaign in Rivio and place its matching block on the intended Shopify page. Checkout, Thank you, and Order status are separate surfaces with separate testing flows.
Before you begin
Use an eligible Shopify Plus store. Open Apps > Rivio Checkout Customizer and check the feature’s listed supported page. For a visual feature, configure it in Rivio and save its matching editor placement.
Worked example: Offer a Bottle on the Checkout page
Example setup: Demo T-shirt as the trigger; Demo Bottle $20 as the offer; an eligible store and target page.
Step-by-step instructions
Open Discounts & upsells > Checkout upsell.
Create a campaign named T-shirt to Bottle. Under Trigger conditions choose Specific products and select Demo T-shirt.
Under Upsell products choose Specific products and add Demo Bottle. These are different selections: buying the shirt qualifies the buyer; the bottle is the recommendation.
Set a supported Offer incentive to 10% and review whether Apply discount on each item is enabled. For a single $20 bottle, the illustrative offer reduction is $2.
Enter Complete your kit as the headline. Review multiple quantities, hide-already-in-cart, and hide-widget-after-add options shown for this surface.
Set Show on to Checkout where that selector is available. Set a distinct Priority such as 0 and Active status, then save.
Open Shopify’s Checkout and Accounts Editor, select the Checkout page, add the matching Rivio upsell block in a supported location, and save.
Start checkout with Demo T-shirt in the cart. Confirm the Bottle offer and its price, accept it, and inspect the added cart line before payment.
Verify the result
| Test case | Expected result or verification |
|---|---|
| Trigger shirt present and offer bottle absent | The eligible active campaign displays on its placed surface. |
| Cart/order without the shirt | This specific-product campaign does not qualify. |
| Bottle already present with hide-already-in-cart enabled | The offer can intentionally be hidden. |
| Accepted checkout offer | The offered variant and quantity appear in the checkout cart with the intended price/discount. |
Important: Checkout-step upsells require Shopify Plus. An incentive is separate from the trigger condition. The lowest Priority number takes precedence between matching campaigns.
If the result is different
| Check | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Nothing appears | Check campaign/rule status, target surface, trigger inputs, available products, and saved editor placement. |
| A different offer appears | Inspect matching campaigns; the lowest Priority number takes precedence. |
| An offer disappears after adding an item | Check hide-already-added and hide-after-acceptance behavior before creating a duplicate campaign. |
