How to test free gifts when cart eligibility, stock, or gift quantities change
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Test the auto-add gift under changing cart eligibility and gift availability.
When to use this guide
Use this before launching a gift-with-purchase promotion.
Before you begin
Use Shopify Plus and the current Rivio feature entitlement. Save the active configuration and its matching supported checkout placement before testing.
Worked example
Use one Demo Keyring gift above $100 in the example currency and verify that it is actually free.
Step-by-step instructions
- Select the exact gift variant and supported quantity, then record the eligibility condition and free-price behaviour.
- Save and place the active auto-add configuration.
- Test a cart below the threshold, at it, and above it using the exact operator.
- Reduce or remove qualifying items and inspect whether the gift remains and what it costs. Restore eligibility and check for duplicates.
- In a controlled test, check an unavailable gift variant and the store’s actual inventory policy. Do not alter customer stock solely for testing.
- Complete a qualifying order and confirm gift variant, quantity, availability, and zero charged price.

Verify the result
| Test | Expected result or check |
|---|---|
| Qualifying cart | The intended gift is present at its configured quantity and price. |
| Eligibility removed | No unintended free gift is granted. |
| Unavailable gift | Record the current behaviour and resolve misleading promises. |

Limitations
- Adding a product is not proof that its charged price is zero.
- Do not assume unsupported multiple-campaign priority or automatic substitution.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The expected result does not appear | Check the saved state, exact feature configuration, supported page, and matching test inputs. |
| The preview and actual page differ | Use a real test checkout, completed order, or signed-in account; editor data is simulated. |
| A change has an unexpected effect | Repeat the same test with one relevant setting changed. Review other active rules before adding another copy. |
