How Upsell Campaign Priority and Offer Behavior Work
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
When multiple eligible upsell campaigns match the same cart, the lowest Priority number takes precedence. Offer behavior settings can also hide already-added recommendations or the widget after acceptance.
How this feature works
A trigger product determines who qualifies for an offer; the offer product is the recommendation the buyer can purchase. Configure the campaign in Rivio and place its matching block on the intended Shopify page. Checkout, Thank you, and Order status are separate surfaces with separate testing flows.
Before you begin
Open Apps > Rivio Checkout Customizer in the intended store. Prepare the cart, customer, products, address, or order needed by the example, and check the feature’s supported inputs before activating it.
Worked example: Choose which matching upsell campaign wins
Example setup: Two campaigns triggered by the same Demo T-shirt; Bottle and Cap offer products.
Step-by-step instructions
Create Bottle offer with the shirt trigger, a selected bottle offer, Priority 0, and Active status.
Create Cap offer with the same trigger and surface, Priority 5, and Active status.
Place and save the matching upsell block on that surface.
Start a matching cart/order and verify that the lowest-number eligible campaign takes precedence.
Review hide-products-already-in-cart and multiple-quantity options. Test with the offered item already present and with quantities where supported.
Change priorities in the demo setup, save, and retest to verify the intended campaign.
For checkout, test hide-widget-after-add if enabled and inspect the final cart.
Verify the result
| Test case | Expected result or verification |
|---|---|
| Both campaigns match | Priority 0 takes precedence over Priority 5. |
| Priorities reversed | Retest the expected winner after saving. |
| Hide-already-in-cart enabled | An existing offer item can intentionally hide that recommendation. |
Important: Use distinct priority values for competing campaigns. Do not invent a tie-breaking guarantee for equal values.
If the result is different
| Check | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Nothing appears | Check campaign/rule status, target surface, trigger inputs, available products, and saved editor placement. |
| A different offer appears | Inspect matching campaigns; the lowest Priority number takes precedence. |
| An offer disappears after adding an item | Check hide-already-added and hide-after-acceptance behavior before creating a duplicate campaign. |
