How to test shipping method inputs when customers change their shipping selection

What you will achieve in this guide

Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.

EXPECTED SETUP TIME Varies by feature
COMPATIBILITY See requirements in this guide
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY Zero Code Required

Test a shipping-specific field as a customer switches between eligible shipping methods.

When to use this guide

Use this for method-specific information such as a building access code for Local delivery.

Before you begin

Use Shopify Plus and the current Rivio feature entitlement. Save the active configuration and its matching supported checkout placement before testing.

Worked example

Configure Building access code for Local delivery and retain Standard as a second eligible rate.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Record the actual checkout labels for Local delivery and Standard. Ensure both serve the test cart and address.
  2. Open Shipping method input and match the intended Local delivery rate; enter the field label.
  3. Save the active configuration and matching checkout placement.
  4. Select Local delivery, enter TEST-482, then change to Standard. Check whether the field is shown and whether its value is retained.
  5. Switch back to Local delivery and observe the field’s value. Do not infer retention from its visibility.
  6. Complete separate orders with each final shipping selection. Inspect the selected method and saved field values on each order.

Verify the result

Test Expected result or check
Local delivery selected The configured field is available when its matching conditions apply.
Standard selected The method-specific field follows the configured visibility rule.
Selection changed before purchase Verify actual value retention and the final saved order data.

Limitations

  • The field does not create or alter a shipping rate.
  • Do not promise automatic clearing or retention without observing the current behaviour.
  • Selected shipping method is unavailable as a display-condition input on Order status.

Troubleshooting

Problem What to check
The expected result does not appear Check the saved state, exact feature configuration, supported page, and matching test inputs.
The preview and actual page differ Use a real test checkout, completed order, or signed-in account; editor data is simulated.
A change has an unexpected effect Repeat the same test with one relevant setting changed. Review other active rules before adding another copy.
