How to Use Shopify Checkout Links in Email, Ads & Social Media
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Cart and checkout links prefill selected variants and quantities for campaigns or individual buyers.
How this feature works
Cart links open a prefilled cart; checkout links open checkout with the selected variants and quantities. Optional codes must already exist and remain eligible. Links do not reserve inventory, bypass validation, or automatically submit payment. Keep personal customer-prefill details out of public campaign links.
Before you begin
Open Apps > Rivio Checkout Customizer in the intended store. Prepare the cart, customer, products, address, or order needed by the example, and check the feature’s supported inputs before activating it.
Worked example: Share a public offer link that survives tracking
Example setup: A generic two-shirt cart/checkout link and an existing eligible SAVE10 code.
Step-by-step instructions
Create a link with the exact test variant and quantity 2; leave customer email and address fields empty.
Choose Cart or Checkout according to whether shoppers should review the cart first.
Test the unmodified link in a fresh session and record the correct destination, items, and discount behavior.
Add it to a draft email, ad, or social post using the platform’s normal link control.
Open the actual final tracked/redirected link from the draft or preview and verify it still reaches the intended destination.
Repeat after changing the selected products, quantities, or discount eligibility before reusing the campaign.
Verify the result
| Test case | Expected result or verification |
|---|---|
| Public campaign link | Contains the intended product offer without a buyer’s personal-prefill details. |
| Tracked final link | Still opens the correct items and quantity. |
| Expired code | Checkout follows Shopify discount eligibility; the link does not renew the offer. |
Important: Use a separate private link for individually prefilled customer details.
If the result is different
| Check | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Wrong item/quantity | Review the exact selected variant and generated URL, then test a fresh session. |
| Code not accepted | Check that the code exists, is active, and is eligible for the current cart/customer. |
| Tracked campaign link differs | Test the final email/ad/social redirect, not only the original untracked URL. |
