Where Are Custom Shopify Customer Profile Fields Stored?
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow the feature-specific setup and testing instructions below. Check the supported pages and plan requirements before activating the feature.
Custom Profile answers are stored as customer metafields and can prefill on return visits. Order-level custom input fields instead store order attributes; check the record that matches the feature.
Key distinctions
| Information | Where to check |
|---|---|
| Custom Profile answer | Customer metafield; appropriate for persistent customer-level data. |
| Order-level custom input | Order attribute; appropriate for one purchase. |
| Survey/form response | The selected form’s submissions view; verify an actual submission. |
How this feature works
Customer Profile answers belong to the customer record; order custom fields belong to an order. Inspect the appropriate destination rather than assuming every input is stored in the same place.
Before you begin
Use Shopify’s current supported customer accounts and a signed-in test customer. For order-related features, use a customer with a past order. Select the exact Profile, Orders, or Order status placement supported by the feature.
Worked example: Save and revisit a customer-level preference
Example setup: A signed-in test customer; a field labelled Preferred delivery note.
Step-by-step instructions
Open Customer accounts > Custom profile fields and create the field using a supported input type.
Enter a clear label, and configure supported required/options controls; use optional for this preference example.
Save as Active and place the matching extension on Profile in Shopify’s editor, then save the editor.
Sign in and enter Please ring the side-door bell. Submit using the provided save action.
Leave the page and revisit Profile with the same account; verify the saved answer is prefilled.
To verify storage, inspect the test customer’s corresponding metafields in Shopify where accessible, rather than searching an order’s attributes.
Change the value and repeat the return-visit test to confirm the updated answer is retained.
Verify the result
| Test case | Expected result or verification |
|---|---|
| Same customer returns | The saved customer-level answer is prefilled. |
| Different customer | Do not expect the first customer’s preference to appear. |
| Order-specific gift message | Use order custom fields and order attributes instead. |
Important: The app handles its field storage. Collecting a tax identifier is not verification or a tax calculation.
If the result is different
| Check | What it means / what to do |
|---|---|
| Account feature is missing | Confirm current supported customer accounts, the matching page/action placement, and saved feature state. |
| Customer field value seems missing | Use the same signed-in customer and check the customer metafield rather than order attributes. |
| Buy Again price differs from the old order | The new cart uses current availability, pricing, discounts, and checkout rules. |
