How to Use Text, Email, Phone, Number, and Date Fields
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow this step-by-step documentation to configure custom B2B registration forms, approval workflows, and customer tagging.
Choose suitable Shopify registration inputs for contact details, business descriptions, purchase volume, and dates.
Before you begin
Open the intended form in the builder and identify what the answer will be used for: review only, field mapping, a visibility condition, or an approval rule. Choose the answer type before configuring those dependencies.
Select an input that matches the data
Short text fits a business name or identifier; Paragraph fits purchase plans or an explanation. Email collects an address for matching and communications, Phone provides an international country picker, Number stores numeric answers for numeric rules, and Date collects a calendar date.
Avoid asking for annual purchasing as an unrestricted paragraph if it must be compared with a minimum value. Explain the intended unit, such as annual purchasing in USD, in the label or help text so applicants provide comparable answers.
Set up this workflow
Use Short text for a brief business identifier and Paragraph for longer explanations.
Add Email for an applicant’s email address and Phone for an international number.
Use Number for numeric values you want to compare in approval rules.
Use Date when applicants need to provide a date.
Configure labels, required flags, and available validation, then save.
Submit representative values and verify the answers in Submissions.
Example
Collect Business name as Short text, Purchase plans as Paragraph, Annual purchase volume as Number, and Intended start date as Date. Use a real inbox you control for email tests.
Expected result
The submission retains the correct values and numeric answers can be evaluated with numeric approval conditions.
Limits and important behavior
- Phone fields include an international country picker.
- Do not use free text for a numeric rule value when a Number field fits.
- Customer creation should have an applicant email for matching existing records.
Troubleshooting and verification
If a numeric rule is unavailable, confirm the answer uses Number rather than Short text. If email notifications or customer matching fail, check which Email field or Customer block supplies the applicant address. Test international phone input with the country picker.

Show the controls used to use Short text for a brief business identifier and Paragraph for longer explanations. Add a second screenshot showing the result of this check: Submit representative values and verify the answers in Submissions. Use dummy applicant details and mask any secrets.
