How to Configure Field Validation

What you will achieve in this guide

Follow this step-by-step documentation to configure custom B2B registration forms, approval workflows, and customer tagging.

EXPECTED SETUP TIME 5-10 Minutes
COMPATIBILITY All Shopify Themes & Plans
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY Zero Code Required

Configure required answers, character limits, and document restrictions to improve the quality of Shopify wholesale applications.

Before you begin

Open the intended form in the builder and identify what the answer will be used for: review only, field mapping, a visibility condition, or an approval rule. Choose the answer type before configuring those dependencies.

Validation checks completion, not qualification

Required settings and type-specific restrictions help applicants submit usable data. These checks happen before a completed application can be reviewed. Approval rules make a separate qualification decision using accepted answers.

Provide help text that matches the actual validation setting. For example, a required PDF up to 5 MB should say so beside the upload field. Do not describe a technically accepted certificate as verified or approved merely because upload validation passed.

Set up this workflow

  1. Open the form and expand a field.

  2. Turn on Required when the answer is necessary.

  3. Set the available limits appropriate to that field type.

  4. For uploads, set allowed types and a maximum size no higher than 20 MB.

  5. Save and attempt a submission with missing or invalid data.

  6. Correct the data and verify the completed application reaches Submissions.

Example

Make Email required and configure a document upload for PDF files up to 5 MB. Try an empty email, a disallowed file, and finally valid inputs.

Expected result

Validation explains the problem and the valid application can be submitted.

Limits and important behavior

  • Validation options depend on the field type.
  • Use specific help text so applicants know how to correct a rejected answer.
  • Do not rely on AI scoring to replace field validation.

Troubleshooting and verification

If a valid-looking answer is rejected, compare the exact required or type-specific constraint with the help text. Test just one field at a time. For uploads, check both the field’s lower limit and the app’s 20 MB hard maximum.

Screenshots to add

Screenshot placeholder: Capture the relevant app screen for “How to Configure Field Validation” after completing the setup. Show the controls used to open the form and expand a field. Add a second screenshot showing the result of this check: Correct the data and verify the completed application reaches Submissions. Use dummy applicant details and mask any secrets.
