How to Use Dropdowns, Radio Buttons, and Checkboxes

What you will achieve in this guide

Follow this step-by-step documentation to configure custom B2B registration forms, approval workflows, and customer tagging.

EXPECTED SETUP TIME 5-10 Minutes
COMPATIBILITY All Shopify Themes & Plans
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY Zero Code Required

Collect consistent Shopify application answers using single-choice dropdowns or radio buttons and multiple-choice checkboxes.

Before you begin

Open the intended form in the builder and identify what the answer will be used for: review only, field mapping, a visibility condition, or an approval rule. Choose the answer type before configuring those dependencies.

Single answers and multiple answers

Dropdown and Radio buttons let applicants choose one saved option. Checkboxes allow multiple selected options. A buyer-type question is usually single choice; product ranges of interest can be multiple choice.

Approval and visibility conditions compare the submitted option values. After renaming or removing an option, review every condition that depends on it. Use distinct, understandable choices rather than overlapping descriptions that produce ambiguous answers.

Set up this workflow

  1. Open the form and add a choice field.

  2. Use Dropdown or Radio buttons for one answer; use Checkboxes when several answers are allowed.

  3. Enter the available options in the field’s option editor.

  4. Set a clear label and mark the field required if needed.

  5. Save and review how the options appear in the live preview.

  6. Submit each important option and check any rules that depend on those answers.

Example

Use a dropdown for business type and checkboxes for product categories the applicant wants to carry.

Expected result

The buyer selects one business type and multiple product categories, and the submission records those intended choices.

Limits and important behavior

  • Use the saved option values consistently when configuring visibility and approval rules.
  • Changing an option label or value can require reviewing dependent rules.

Troubleshooting and verification

If a condition stops matching after you rename an option, review the saved comparison value. Use Dropdown or Radio buttons for one answer and Checkboxes for several. Test a single selection, multiple selections where allowed, and no selection when optional.
