How to Show or Hide Fields with Conditional Logic

What you will achieve in this guide

Follow this step-by-step documentation to configure custom B2B registration forms, approval workflows, and customer tagging.

EXPECTED SETUP TIME 5-10 Minutes
COMPATIBILITY All Shopify Themes & Plans
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY Zero Code Required

Show a Shopify registration field only when another answer meets a basic visibility condition.

Before you begin

Open the intended form in the builder and identify what the answer will be used for: review only, field mapping, a visibility condition, or an approval rule. Choose the answer type before configuring those dependencies.

Visibility logic controls a question, not approval

Enable Show this field only when on the dependent field, select a controlling field, and compare its answer using equals, does not equal, or is one of. The question appears only when that saved condition matches.

This is one visibility condition per field. It does not provide AND/OR condition groups or skip form steps. Approval rules have their own All/Any grouping and decide an application's outcome; showing a document question does not approve or reject the applicant.

Set up this workflow

  1. Open the form and expand the dependent field.

  2. Enable Show this field only when.

  3. Select the field whose answer should control visibility.

  4. Choose equals, does not equal, or is one of, then enter the matching value.

  5. Save and preview both matching and nonmatching answers.

  6. Test the storefront submission with the field visible and hidden.

Example

Show a resale-certificate upload when the applicant selects Yes for tax-exempt resale purchasing.

Expected result

Selecting Yes reveals the certificate question; selecting the other answer hides it. Neither answer by itself is an approval.

Limits and important behavior

  • Only one visibility condition per field is documented.
  • Field visibility does not support AND/OR groups or skipping form steps.
  • Approval rules have their own All/Any matching and should not be confused with visibility logic.

Troubleshooting and verification

If a dependent field remains hidden, inspect its controlling field, selected operator, and exact comparison value. Test both sides of the condition after saving. One visibility condition per field is supported; All/Any approval groups and step skipping are separate concepts.

Screenshots to add

Show the controls used to open the form and expand the dependent field. Add a second screenshot showing the result of this check: Test the storefront submission with the field visible and hidden. Use dummy applicant details and mask any secrets.
