How to Configure File Uploads and Validation
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow this step-by-step documentation to configure custom B2B registration forms, approval workflows, and customer tagging.
Collect resale certificates and business documents through Shopify registration forms with allowed file types and file-size restrictions.
Before you begin
Open the intended form in the builder and identify what the answer will be used for: review only, field mapping, a visibility condition, or an approval rule. Choose the answer type before configuring those dependencies.
Type and size must both be accepted
A File upload field can collect a resale certificate or other supporting document. Configure allowed types and a maximum file size for that field. The app enforces a hard maximum of 20 MB per file, even if a larger limit is entered.
The server checks file type, size, and a signed upload token. Files are stored in Shopify Files. A file being present only proves that an attachment was supplied; your reviewer must inspect the document because AI scoring does not read its contents.
Set up this workflow
Add File upload to your form.
Enter a label and help text naming the document required.
Set Allowed file types using the accepted types for your business.
Set the maximum file size in MB, keeping it at or below 20 MB.
Enable Required if the document is mandatory, then save.
Test a valid document and a disallowed or oversized file, then inspect the accepted upload in Submissions.
Example
For a Certificate field, allow PDF and set a 5 MB limit. Test a small PDF, a JPEG, and a PDF above 5 MB using files without personal information.
Expected result
Only a file meeting both configured type and size restrictions is accepted.
Limits and important behavior
- The server enforces file type, size, and signed-token checks.
- The maximum supported size is 20 MB per file even if a higher value is entered.
- Uploaded files are stored in Shopify Files; AI scoring reads text answers, not file contents.
Troubleshooting and verification
If upload fails, compare the real file type and size with the field restrictions, then retry with a small permitted document. Increasing the field setting above 20 MB cannot bypass the hard cap. Upload acceptance does not establish that a certificate is genuine.
Screenshots to add

Add a second screenshot showing the result of this check: Test a valid document and a disallowed or oversized file, then inspect the accepted upload in Submissions. Use dummy applicant details and mask any secrets.
