How to Map Answers to Shopify Customer and Company Records

What you will achieve in this guide

Follow this step-by-step documentation to configure custom B2B registration forms, approval workflows, and customer tagging.

EXPECTED SETUP TIME 5-10 Minutes
COMPATIBILITY All Shopify Themes & Plans
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY Zero Code Required

Map registration answers to supported Shopify customer or company fields and verify the record created when an application is approved.

Before you begin

Open the intended form in the builder and identify what the answer will be used for: review only, field mapping, a visibility condition, or an approval rule. Choose the answer type before configuring those dependencies.

Collection and Shopify persistence are separate

The builder's Send this field's value to setting identifies a supported Shopify destination. Choose a destination with the same meaning as the answer and avoid two questions competing for the same value. Collection alone does not guarantee every answer is written to a Shopify record.

Customer matching uses email. On an existing customer, approval preserves the existing name, phone, and tags and adds the approval tags. The documented company setup does not persist submitted tax ID, phone, or website to the company record; review those values in the submission.

Set up this workflow

  1. Open the form builder and expand the field you want to map.

  2. Locate Send this field’s value to.

  3. Select a supported destination matching the answer, such as customer email, phone, full name, or company name.

  4. Avoid mapping conflicting answers to the same destination.

  5. Save the form and approve a new test application.

  6. Open the resulting Shopify record and compare it with the submitted values.

Example

Map the applicant Email field to customer email and Business name to company name where the destination is available. Approve a test using a new email and inspect the linked records.

Expected result

Supported destinations contain the intended values; existing customer details follow the preservation behavior described in the customer-creation guide.

Limits and important behavior

  • The current release upserts customers by email and preserves an existing customer’s name, phone, and tags.
  • The app’s documented company setup does not transfer tax ID, phone, or website to the company record; these remain on the submission.
  • A mapping option should not be treated as proof that every company field is currently persisted.

Troubleshooting and verification

If the submission has a value but the Shopify record does not, first confirm approval and the supported destination mapping. For an existing customer, preserved name and phone values are expected. Submitted company tax ID, phone, and website are not promised as persisted company fields.

Screenshots to add

Show the controls used to open the form builder and expand the field you want to map. Add a second screenshot showing the result of this check: Open the resulting Shopify record and compare it with the submitted values. Use dummy applicant details and mask any secrets.
