How to Configure Customer Tags on Approval

What you will achieve in this guide

Follow this step-by-step documentation to configure custom B2B registration forms, approval workflows, and customer tagging.

EXPECTED SETUP TIME 5-10 Minutes
COMPATIBILITY All Shopify Themes & Plans
TECHNICAL DIFFICULTY Zero Code Required

Add Shopify customer tags when a registration application is approved while retaining existing customer tags.

Before you begin

Review the form’s questions, saved approval settings, and active rule order. Have controlled applications ready for matching and nonmatching cases. Check Shopify B2B availability separately before enabling company creation.

Tags identify the approved customer

After approval, the configured customer tags are added to the customer matched by applicant email. Existing tags remain alongside the new tags. Give different programs distinct tags when another workflow needs to distinguish them.

Tags alone do not assign catalogs, tax exemptions, terms, or storefront prices. The customer-segment action builds a segment based on these tags; when tags change, review the warning and update that segment rather than assuming its criteria changed automatically.

Set up this workflow

  1. Open the form Settings and select Advanced.

  2. Find After approval → Customer tags.

  3. Enter the tags that identify approved applicants for this form.

  4. Review spelling and separators shown by the settings helper.

  5. Save and approve a test application.

  6. Open the Shopify customer and confirm the approval tags were added alongside any existing tags.

Example

Configure demo-wholesale as an approval tag and approve a test buyer. Compare the customer's tags before and after approval.

Expected result

The app adds the configured tag while preserving unrelated existing tags; a tag alone does not define storefront pricing.

Limits and important behavior

  • The current customer upsert preserves existing customer tags, name, and phone.
  • Tags do not themselves assign a B2B catalog, price list, payment terms, or tax exemption.
  • Changing tags can require updating the linked customer segment.

Troubleshooting and verification

If a tag is absent, confirm the application is Approved, inspect the form’s saved after-approval tags, and open the linked customer. If access still differs, check the downstream pricing or content tool. Tags identify customers but do not themselves assign catalogs or discounts.

Screenshots to add

Screenshot placeholder: Capture the relevant app screen for “How to Configure Customer Tags on Approval” after completing the setup. Show the controls used to open the form Settings and select Advanced. Add a second screenshot showing the result of this check: Open the Shopify customer and confirm the approval tags were added alongside any existing tags. Use dummy applicant details and mask any secrets.
