Why Wasn’t a Shopify Customer or Company Created?
What you will achieve in this guide
Follow this step-by-step documentation to configure custom B2B registration forms, approval workflows, and customer tagging.
Review the approval status, applicant email, company option, and Shopify resource availability when an expected onboarding record is missing.
Before you begin
Record the affected store, form name, slug, application reference if available, and approximate time. Reproduce the issue once with dummy data and note the exact message before changing settings.
Check approval before looking for new records
A received or Pending application has not completed approval onboarding. Once approved, a customer can be reused by email rather than appearing as a new record. The submission's linked customer is the best starting point.
Company creation additionally needs the after-approval option, suitable business/contact data, and available Shopify B2B resources. Customer tagging and company creation are separate effects, so investigate which one is missing.
Reference and examples
| Situation | Where to check |
|---|---|
| Still Pending | Approve deliberately after review. |
| No new customer | Open linked customer; an existing email reuses a record. |
| Customer exists; company missing | After-approval company option and required data. |
| B2B unavailable | Shopify plan/resource availability for the store. |
| Company exists; catalog absent | Complete catalog setup separately in Shopify. |
Diagnose and resolve the problem
Confirm the application was Approved rather than merely received or left Pending.
Check the email used for customer matching.
Inspect the customer link to see whether an existing customer was reused.
For company creation, verify the form’s after-approval option and B2B contact data.
Check Shopify B2B availability for the target store.
Approve a suitable test and inspect linked records, or contact support with the reference and error details.
Example
Submit a valid application but leave it Pending, then inspect Shopify before and after a deliberate approval.
Expected result
Receipt alone does not create approval records; company creation additionally needs the option, suitable data, and Shopify B2B availability.
Limits and important behavior
- Existing customers are upserted by email, not necessarily created again.
- Company creation is optional and separate from customer tagging.
- Catalogs and payment terms are not assigned by the documented company setup.
